Contemporary dance classes allow the dancers to express movements in an eccentric and self-expressed way.  Contemporary choreography can also be known for its dramatic and expressive qualities.

Different variations of music is used to fully immerse the dancer into the contemporary style.

Contemporary technique focuses on expression in a variety of styles that adds valuable experience in improvisation.

Dancers must have a clear understanding and experience in a variety of dance styles in order to be able to perform contemporary dance choreography.  Established dance technique is required.

At DU, dancers normally start with modern dance classes in order to first learn technique and a variety of dance styles before they are able to join the contemporary dance classes.

Lyrical dance has an expressive nature in choreography.

Emotional:  Lyrical dance is a style that's strongly associated with displaying emotions, such as love, joy, hurt, or anger.

Expressive:  Dancers use their bodies and facial movements to express the emotions of the lyrics.

Fluid:  Lyrical dance is known for its fluid motions.

Fast-paced:  Lyrical dance is usually faster than ballet but not as fast as jazz.

Choreographed:  Lyrical dance choreography is often emotional, gripping, and delicate.

Inspired by lyrics:  The lyrics of the song are a driving force and key inspiration for the movement.

Both these styles are introduced in the modern dance classes at DU.

DU proudly follows the Modern dance exam syllabus of the Association of International Dance Teachers (better known as A.I.D.T).

Modern dance classes start from ages 3+
